日本各地に分布するコカブトムシの沖縄・八重山諸島亜種です。体長2cm前後です。やんばるの森で夜間に樹幹で活動していた個体を撮影しました。樹液を吸うカブトムシと異なり肉食性のようです。
This is the Okinawa and Yaeyama subspecies of Eophileurus chinensis, a small rhinoceros beetle distributed across Japan. Adults measure around 2 cm in length. I photographed this individual at night in the Yanbaru forest, where it was active on a tree trunk. Unlike the sap-feeding rhinoceros beetles, this species appears to be carnivorous.
